Swimming for Weight Loss

For weight loss people mostly prefers jogging, running and walking. These all are included in cardiovascular exercise.

But unlike these exercises swimming requires more efforts due to water density which is more than air. This forces us to use muscles.

The most important point about swimming is that it forces us to move all our body parts thus acting as a full-body workout. It tones our upper, lower body and core body at the same time.

How much you should swim to lose weight?

Well, the answer to this question is quite complicated, but I will still try to answer it.

How much should you swim for weight loss is totally dependent on your body, swimming stroke that you use and your speed of swimming.

All these calculations are different for everyone.

For a better result according to your body, you can take help from a swimming coach. They can guide you because they have accurate knowledge about swimming.

Vigorous swimming for 60 minutes burns approximately 800 calories. Swimming for four times in a week can help you to loose 3.5 pounds ( approximately under certain conditions)

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says that one should swim for 150 minutes in a week. It will also help to maintain your weight which will keep you away from future weight loss exercises.

For burning 1 kg, you have to loose almost 7000 calories.

According to a study conducted by Indiana University researchers, the comparison of recreational swimmers and non-swimmers showed that recreational swimmers had a slim waist, leaner muscles and hips in comparison with non-swimmers.

So, it is very easy to burn it with swimming.

Maybe, you will also like to know about Types of Strokes in swimming.

Swimming Style for Weight Loss

Freestyle stroke

It is easiest to perform and that is why, it is the most popular stroke for swimmers. The freestyle stroke is also known as front crawl

This stroke is used in competition because it is fast and more efficient. Thus, this is used in freestyle races and is also considered as the favorite stroke for swimmers.

In this stroke the position of the body is horizontal to water surface. The head remains downwards to the surface, except while breathing.

You have to roll your body from one side to the other, always turning to the side of the arm that is currently pulling in the water.

It burns huge number of calories. A 58 kg person can burn around 590 calories if he performs freestyle swimming for an hour.

Butterfly stroke

The Butterfly stroke is swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick which is popularly known as "Dolphin kick".

This is the most difficult stroke for newbies as compared to breaststroke, front crawl, or backstroke. It requires good technique as well as strong muscles.

It was originated from the breaststroke. It was the newest swimming style swum in competition, first swum in 1933.

It work your shoulders, arms, and chest.

With its dolphin like kick it burns maximum number of calories. It burns around 150 calories in 10 minutes for a person weighing around 72 kilos.
